St Moritz — at 1,856 metres above sea level in the Upper Engadin — is the world's original ski resort and still its most exclusive. The Cresta Run (toboggan, since 1884), the Polo World Cup on Snow (January), and the White Turf horse racing on the frozen lake (February) are the defining events of the alpine social calendar. Badrutt's Palace — the hotel that invented the concept of luxury mountain hospitality — remains the epicentre.
