Lübeck — the "Queen of the Hanseatic League" — is a UNESCO World Heritage city of extraordinary medieval completeness, its seven spires rising above the Trave River as they have since the 13th century. The city produced Thomas Mann (Buddenbrooks), Günter Grass, and the Niederegger marzipan tradition. The Holstentor (1478) is one of Germany's great civic gateways. The Baltic coast, Travemünde, and the Brodten Cliff are thirty minutes away.
