Münster — the "bicycle capital of Germany" — is a university city of Gothic cathedrals, reconstructed patrician facades, and the Peace of Westphalia (1648, which ended the Thirty Years' War and was signed here). The Prinzipalmarkt, with its Gothic gabled houses and arcades, is one of the most beautiful urban streetscapes in northern Germany. The Allwetterzoo and the LWL Museum für Kunst und Kultur are among the region's finest.
