Konstanz, on the southwestern shore of Lake Constance (Bodensee), is Germany's southernmost city, so mild that palm trees grow in the old town. The Council of Constance (1414-1418) deposed three popes here; the Cathedral, the Konzilgebäude (Council Building), and the old town are among Germany's most beautiful.
