Bremen — a Free Hanseatic City since 1358 — is a city of maritime merchants, Gothic town halls, and the Grimm Brothers' Town Musicians of Bremen. The UNESCO World Heritage Marktplatz (with the Roland statue, the Town Hall, and St Petri Cathedral) is the most complete mediaeval town square in northern Germany. The Schnoor quarter, with its 15th-century alleyways, is one of Germany's most intact historic neighbourhoods.
